Bacteria - White or clear slime
Iron - Red/Brown staining
Manganese - Black staining
Sulfates - Green/Blue
Calcium - White
Silica - Does not contribute to hardness, but provides scale
Sodium - Effects PH of water, does not contribute to hardness
Alkalinity - Above PH of 7
Acidity - Water below PH of 7
Sulfate - Can act as a laxative and is bitter in taste
Hydrogen Sulfate - Gas given off that smells of rotten eggs
Ammonia gas bubbles - Smell of ammonia
Cloudy - Salt presentation
Earthy smells - Mild-like bacteria, algal-like bacteria originating from streptomycetes (from surface) or Cyanobacteria (water-based)
Fecal smell - Contamination from fecal waste such as septic
Fresh vegetable scent - Green algae, diatoms and dismiss can resemble rotting vegetables when in an advanced stage of bloom.
Chemical smell - Gasoline and solvents often from contamination or naturally occurring benzene, ethyl-benzene or xylene.
