What is wrong with my water well?

  • Bacteria - White or clear slime

  • Iron - Red/Brown staining

  • Manganese - Black staining

  • Sulfates - Green/Blue

  • Calcium - White

  • Silica - Does not contribute to hardness, but provides scale

  • Sodium - Effects PH of water, does not contribute to hardness

  • Alkalinity - Above PH of 7

  • Acidity - Water below PH of 7

  • Sulfate - Can act as a laxative and is bitter in taste

  • Hydrogen Sulfate - Gas given off that smells of rotten eggs

  • Ammonia gas bubbles - Smell of ammonia

  • Cloudy - Salt presentation

  • Earthy smells - Mild-like bacteria, algal-like bacteria originating from streptomycetes (from surface) or Cyanobacteria (water-based)

  • Fecal smell - Contamination from fecal waste such as septic

  • Fresh vegetable scent - Green algae, diatoms and dismiss can resemble rotting vegetables when in an advanced stage of bloom.

  • Chemical smell - Gasoline and solvents often from contamination or naturally occurring benzene, ethyl-benzene or xylene.
